Mason Burstow Joins Sheffield Wednesday on Loan

Sheffield Wednesday have completed the season-long loan signing of striker Mason Burstow from Hull City.

The 22-year-old arrives at Hillsborough after an impressive campaign with Bolton Wanderers, where he scored 12 goals and played a key role in their promotion from League One.

Burstow helped Bolton reach the play-off final before they secured their place in the Championship, and he now joins Henrik Pedersen’s Wednesday squad looking to build on the most productive season of his career.

The striker said the direction of the club and the opportunity to continue his development were major factors in the move.

“The club is in an upward direction and I'm very happy and excited to be part of it. I've got a benchmark now that I've set from last season and I only want to improve and add more goals and get another trophy.”

Burstow also highlighted Pedersen’s detailed approach and believes the Wednesday head coach can help him take another step forward.

“The gaffer is very passionate in the way he speaks and his tactical and technical analysis, and the detail, is top. It's going to help me develop my game and add to what I achieved last year.”

The forward is already familiar with the Hillsborough atmosphere, having previously faced Wednesday at home and away.

“I've played against Wednesday away and home and the fans are always a big voice. They always seem to out-sing everyone so I'm glad to be on the other side of it!”

A striker on an upward trajectory

Burstow began his career with Charlton Athletic and scored with his first touch in senior football.

His early progress earned him a move to Chelsea before a season-long loan spell with Sunderland. Hull City then signed the striker on a four-year contract, and he made 31 appearances during his first campaign with the Tigers.

A further loan move followed last season, with Burstow flourishing at Bolton and reaching double figures as the club secured promotion from League One.

Wednesday Sporting Director Simon Wilson believes the Owls are signing a player whose game is continuing to develop.

“After a breakout season last year with Bolton Wanderers, Mason is a terrific signing for us. At 22, his 12 goals in a promotion-winning campaign show that he is on an upward trajectory and we think we are getting an even better version of him because of this.”

Wilson also highlighted the work Burstow provides beyond his goals.

“He will also work for the team, pressing, linking play and creating opportunities for others. We are excited by what Mason will bring to our group and we are delighted to welcome him to Sheffield Wednesday.”

Burstow now joins up with the Wednesday squad at Middlewood Road as preparations continue for the 2026/27 League One campaign.
