Sheffield Wednesday have been drawn away to Oldham Athletic in the first round of the FA Cup, with the tie to be played over the weekend of November 7-8. The winners will collect £47,750 in prize money and a place in the second-round draw.
Relegation from the Championship means Wednesday enter at the first-round stage this season. The last time they started this early, in 2022/23, they beat Morecambe 2-0 and went on to reach the fourth round. Last season's run ended at the first hurdle in the third round, when a young side lost 2-0 at home to Brentford.
Keillor-Dunn heads back to Boundary Park
The draw sends Davis Keillor-Dunn back to a club where he spent two seasons. He was Oldham's top scorer in 2021-22, scoring 15 league goals and 17 in all competitions in the season the club lost its Football League status.
He arrives in good form. Keillor-Dunn joined Wednesday on loan from Wrexham last month and scored twice in Saturday's 5-0 win over AFC Wimbledon. That result took the Owls back into the League One play-off places and extended their unbeaten run to nine games in all competitions.
Oldham's mixed start under Mellon
Micky Mellon's side sit 19th in League Two, one point above the relegation zone. The division is so compressed that the same position leaves them only four points off the play-offs. Their 4-1 win over Cheltenham at Boundary Park on Saturday was their first league victory since August, with left-back Jamie Robson scoring the first two goals of his Oldham career.
Wednesday have recent experience of the ground in both directions. Oldham beat them 4-0 there in pre-season, while the Owls' last competitive visit, a League Cup first-round tie in 2012, ended in a 4-2 win.
A busy run of fixtures
The cup weekend falls between a home League One game against Blackpool and Wednesday's final Jersey Mike's Trophy group match against Accrington Stanley, so Henrik Pedersen's team selection will be worth watching.
Elsewhere in the region, Doncaster Rovers visit Kidderminster Harriers and Rotherham United travel to Bromley. Barnsley host Aldershot Town or Tadley Calleva, and Chesterfield host Yeovil Town or Leatherhead.
Before any of that, Wednesday travel to Notts County on Tuesday night, kick-off 7.45pm. Our match preview has the team news.
