Sil Swinkels seals Sheffield Wednesday move as Owls add another defensive option

Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed the signing of Dutch defender Sil Swinkels from Aston Villa, with the 22-year-old becoming the latest addition to Henrik Pedersen’s squad ahead of the new campaign.

Swinkels arrives at Hillsborough with a Premier League academy background, EFL experience and the profile of a player still developing into senior football. The centre-back has been on the books at Aston Villa since 2020, having previously come through youth football in the Netherlands with RKSV Rhode, Helmond Sport, Brabant United and Vitesse Arnhem.

Born in Sint-Oedenrode, Swinkels has also represented the Netherlands at youth level, featuring for the Under-15s and Under-18s. His early development led to Villa bringing him to England as a teenager, where he became part of a strong academy group that went on to win the FA Youth Cup in 2021.

For Wednesday, this is another move that fits the direction of the summer so far. The Owls have already added experience and competition in key areas, but Swinkels brings something slightly different: a younger defender with room to grow, while still having already sampled first-team football in England.

His senior breakthrough came through loan spells away from Villa Park. Swinkels spent time with Bristol Rovers, Exeter City and Chesterfield, gaining experience across League One and League Two. His spell at Chesterfield was particularly useful in terms of regular football, giving him a run of senior minutes after a stop-start period earlier in his career.

At 6ft 3in, Swinkels gives Wednesday another physically strong option at the back. He is primarily a centre-back, though he has also been listed as capable of playing on the left side of defence. That flexibility could be useful across a long season, especially with Pedersen continuing to shape a squad that needs both depth and resilience.

The move also adds more competition to a defensive group that has already been strengthened this summer. With Ricardo Santos arriving and Liam Cooper extending his stay, Wednesday now have a blend of experience, physical presence and younger potential in the centre of defence.

Swinkels will not necessarily arrive as an automatic starter, but that may be the point. Wednesday need a squad, not just an eleven. After a difficult period for the club, the rebuild has to be about raising the floor as much as the ceiling. More options, more competition and more players pushing for shirts can only help.

There is also a longer-term angle. At 22, Swinkels is still young enough to improve significantly with regular coaching and the right environment. If Wednesday can help him turn academy pedigree and loan experience into consistent senior performances, this could become a smart piece of recruitment.

For the fans, the message is clear: the summer rebuild is continuing. Swinkels may not be the most headline-grabbing arrival of the window, but he strengthens a key area of the pitch and gives Pedersen another player to work with as Wednesday prepare for the season ahead.

Welcome to Wednesday, Sil.
