Biography

Barry Ryan Bannan was born on 1 December 1989 in Airdrie, Scotland. A technically gifted central midfielder renowned for his vision, passing range and left foot, Bannan began his football journey with Lenzie Youth Club and Albion Rovers before progressing through the academies at Celtic and Aston Villa.

Bannan made his senior debut for Aston Villa in December 2008 and gained further first-team experience during loan spells with Derby County, Blackpool and Leeds United. He helped Blackpool secure promotion to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs in 2010 before establishing himself in Villa’s senior squad.

After leaving Villa, Bannan joined Crystal Palace in 2013 and later spent time on loan with Bolton Wanderers. He signed for Sheffield Wednesday in August 2015 and quickly became one of the club’s most influential and popular players.

Bannan was appointed Wednesday captain ahead of the 2020/21 season and went on to become one of the club’s leading appearance makers. He played a central role in the Owls’ dramatic promotion from League One in 2023, which culminated in a play-off final victory over Barnsley at Wembley. His performances for Wednesday earned him several individual accolades, including multiple selections in the PFA and EFL teams of the season and the 2021/22 EFL Goal of the Season award.

After making 477 appearances during his first spell at Hillsborough, Bannan joined Millwall in January 2026. His time away proved brief, however, as he returned to Sheffield Wednesday in July 2026, signing a new 12-month contract and continuing his long association with the club.

At international level, Bannan represented Scotland at under-21 and B-team level before making his senior debut in November 2010. He earned 27 senior caps for his country between 2010 and 2017.

A composed and creative midfielder, Bannan is recognised for his ability to dictate play, produce defence-splitting passes and score spectacular goals from distance. His longevity, consistency and commitment have established him as one of Sheffield Wednesday’s defining players of the modern era.
