Biography
Callum Slattery is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Sheffield Wednesday.
Born in Kidlington, Oxfordshire, Slattery spent time in Chelsea’s youth system before joining Southampton in 2008.
He progressed through the Saints academy and signed his first professional contract with the club in July 2017.
Slattery developed as a composed central midfielder and earned recognition at both club and international youth level.
He made his senior Southampton debut on 5 January 2019, starting an FA Cup third-round tie against Derby County at Pride Park.
Slattery later made three Premier League appearances for the club and also featured regularly for Southampton’s Under-21 side in the EFL Trophy.
With first-team opportunities limited, he joined Dutch side De Graafschap on loan in January 2020.
Slattery made five appearances in the Eerste Divisie and scored once before the season was curtailed.
The move provided his first sustained experience of senior football and allowed him to continue his development in a different footballing environment.
He returned to England and joined Gillingham on loan in January 2021.
Slattery made his debut two days later in a 1–0 victory over Accrington Stanley and went on to make seven League One appearances during the remainder of the campaign.
He left Southampton permanently in July 2021 and joined Motherwell on a three-year contract.
Slattery quickly established himself as an important member of the Motherwell midfield and became a regular starter at Fir Park.
He contributed goals from midfield and developed a reputation for his passing, set-piece delivery and ability to score from distance.
During the 2022/23 season, Slattery scored the opening goal in a late comeback against Livingston that secured Motherwell’s place in the top half of the Scottish Premiership.
His progress was interrupted in January 2024 when he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during training.
The injury kept him out of competitive action for more than a year.
Slattery returned after 369 days and scored against Hibernian during his comeback period.
He remained an important member of the squad during the 2025/26 season as Motherwell finished fourth in the Scottish Premiership and secured qualification for European competition.
Slattery left Motherwell in May 2026 after five seasons with the club.
He made 148 appearances and scored 19 goals during his time at Fir Park.
Sheffield Wednesday confirmed his signing on 29 June 2026 following the expiration of his Motherwell contract.
Slattery agreed a three-year deal at Hillsborough and joined the Owls ahead of the 2026/27 League One campaign.
He arrived with senior experience in the Premier League, League One, the Eerste Divisie and the Scottish Premiership.
At international level, Slattery represented England at Under-16, Under-17 and Under-20 level.
He was part of the England Under-20 squad that won the 2017 Toulon Tournament.
Slattery converted a penalty during the shootout victory over Ivory Coast in the final as England retained the trophy.
He is a technically capable central midfielder who is comfortable receiving possession and helping dictate play from the middle of the pitch.
Slattery can operate as a conventional central midfielder, in a deeper holding role or further forward as an attacking midfielder.
His strengths include passing, set-piece delivery and shooting from outside the penalty area.
He also provides energy without the ball and is willing to press opponents and compete for possession.
