Sheffield-born centre-back Ernie Weaver progressed through Wednesday’s academy before signing professional terms in July 2025. He impressed during his first Championship starts and was named the Owls’ Player of the Month before injury interrupted his breakthrough season.
Player profile
Ernie Luke Weaver is an English professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Sheffield Wednesday.
Born in Sheffield, Weaver attended Wales High School in Kiveton Park and developed through Wednesday’s academy system.
He began a two-year scholarship with the Owls ahead of the 2023/24 season.
Weaver established himself as a natural leader within the youth ranks and was appointed captain of Wednesday’s Under-18 side.
He progressed into the development squad and impressed with his defensive organisation, composure and ability to lead the back line.
After completing his scholarship, Weaver signed his first professional contract with Sheffield Wednesday on 2 July 2025.
He was promoted into the senior squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign and was allocated squad number 30.
Weaver made his professional debut on 13 August 2025, starting an EFL Cup first-round tie away to Bolton Wanderers.
He completed the full match as a youthful Wednesday side drew 3–3 before progressing through a penalty shootout.
His Championship debut followed three days later when he came on as a late substitute against Stoke City at Hillsborough.
Weaver remained involved with the senior group and also featured in Wednesday’s EFL Cup victory over Leeds United.
In September 2025, he was moved permanently into the first-team dressing room alongside fellow academy graduates Reece Johnson, Jarvis Thornton and Logan Stretch.
Weaver made his first Championship start away to Portsmouth on 20 September 2025.
He helped Wednesday keep a clean sheet in a 2–0 victory that secured the club’s first league win of the season.
The centre-back retained his place for the following fixtures and produced a series of assured performances in the Wednesday defence.
His impact during the breakthrough period earned him Sheffield Wednesday’s Player of the Month award for September 2025.
Weaver’s progress was interrupted the following month when it was confirmed that he had been playing with a foot injury.
The injury required surgery and ruled him out for an extended period.
He continued his rehabilitation during the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign after making nine senior appearances across league and cup competition.
Sheffield Wednesday exercised an option in Weaver’s contract in May 2026, extending his stay at Hillsborough until the summer of 2027.
Weaver is a right-footed centre-back who is recognised for his composure, defensive awareness and leadership.
His experience captaining the Under-18 side helped develop his ability to organise the defence and communicate with the players around him.
He is comfortable receiving possession in deeper areas and showed during his first Championship starts that he could adapt quickly to senior football.
