Joe Emery

Joseph Alfred Emery is an English professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Sheffield Wednesday.

Emery began his academy career with Charlton Athletic before joining Sheffield Wednesday as a scholar. He spent two years in the Owls’ academy, progressing through the Under-18 side and into the club’s development squad.

The defender scored the winning goal in Wednesday’s Under-18 Steel City derby victory over Sheffield United in March 2025. He was subsequently offered his first professional contract at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Emery signed professional terms with Sheffield Wednesday on 2 July 2025 and was promoted into the senior squad ahead of the following campaign.

He made his first-team debut on 13 August 2025, starting Wednesday’s EFL Cup tie away to Bolton Wanderers. Emery played 69 minutes before leaving the field with cramp as the youthful Owls progressed following a penalty shootout.

After being named among the substitutes for several Championship fixtures, Emery made his league debut against Bristol City on 24 January 2026.

The young defender received further senior opportunities during the remainder of the season while continuing his development with the Under-21s. Sheffield Wednesday exercised the option in Emery’s contract in May 2026, extending his stay at Hillsborough.
