Biography

Liam Jordan Palmer is a Scottish international footballer who plays for Sheffield Wednesday.

Born in Worksop, Palmer grew up supporting Wednesday and joined the club’s academy at the age of seven. He progressed through the youth system as a central midfielder and was named the club’s Academy Player of the Year before signing professional terms.

Palmer made his senior debut on 10 August 2010, starting a League Cup victory over Bury at Hillsborough. His first league start followed against AFC Bournemouth in February 2011, before he scored his first senior goal in a 3–1 win over Milton Keynes Dons later that year.

He made 14 league appearances during Wednesday’s 2011/12 promotion campaign as the Owls finished second in League One and returned to the Championship.

Palmer joined Tranmere Rovers on loan for the 2012/13 season to gain regular first-team experience. Playing primarily in midfield, he made 46 appearances across all competitions before returning to Hillsborough.

He established himself in the Wednesday first team during the 2013/14 campaign. Although originally developed as a midfielder, Palmer increasingly featured at right-back and made 44 appearances in all competitions.

His performances earned him Sheffield Wednesday’s Player of the Season award and a new four-year contract.

Palmer continued to provide a reliable and versatile option for several different managers. He featured at right-back, left-back, centre-back, central midfield and right midfield, reaching 100 appearances in December 2014, 150 in January 2017 and 200 in December 2018.

He regained a regular place during the 2018/19 season and signed a new three-year contract in July 2019. Palmer later captained Wednesday for the first time and made his 250th appearance for the club.

He remained with the Owls through relegation to League One and became an important figure during the club’s attempts to return to the Championship.

Palmer enjoyed one of the strongest seasons of his career during the 2022/23 promotion campaign. He made his 350th Wednesday appearance against Bolton Wanderers in August 2022, captaining the team and scoring during the match.

His performances earned him the League One Player of the Month award for August. At the end of the season, he was named both Sheffield Wednesday’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season.

Palmer featured in Wednesday’s remarkable play-off semi-final comeback against Peterborough United before helping the Owls defeat Barnsley at Wembley to secure promotion.

He made his 400th Sheffield Wednesday appearance against Cardiff City in August 2023, becoming only the 15th player in the club’s history to reach the landmark.

A testimonial match was held in his honour against CD Leganés at Hillsborough in August 2024, recognising his long service to the club.

Following Barry Bannan’s departure in January 2026, Palmer was appointed Sheffield Wednesday captain.

On 10 March 2026, he made his 500th appearance for the Owls in a Championship fixture against Watford. He became only the fourth player in Wednesday history to reach the milestone.

The club subsequently exercised an option to extend his contract for the 2026/27 season.

Although born in England, Palmer qualified to represent Scotland through his grandmother. He represented the country at Under-19 and Under-21 level before making his senior international debut against Kazakhstan in March 2019.

Palmer earned eight senior caps for Scotland between 2019 and 2021.

His career at Hillsborough has included two promotions, more than 500 appearances and two Sheffield Wednesday Player of the Season awards. Having progressed from the academy to become club captain, Palmer is regarded as one of Wednesday’s most loyal and distinguished modern players.
