Biography

Yan Valery is a Tunisian professional footballer who plays primarily as a right-back for Sheffield Wednesday.

Born in Champigny-sur-Marne, France, Valery began playing football with local side AS Outre-Mer du Bois l’Abbé before joining the Rennes academy. He moved to England in 2015 to continue his development with Southampton.

Valery progressed through Southampton’s youth system and made his senior debut in an EFL Cup tie against Leicester City in November 2018. His Premier League debut followed against Manchester United the following month.

The defender scored his first senior goal at Old Trafford in March 2019, striking from distance during a 3–2 defeat. He scored again the following week as Southampton defeated Tottenham Hotspur at St Mary’s.

Valery spent the second half of the 2020/21 season on loan with Birmingham City before returning to Southampton. He left the Saints permanently in September 2022 to join French side Angers.

After two seasons in France, Valery returned to English football and signed for Sheffield Wednesday in June 2024. He reunited at Hillsborough with Danny Röhl, who had previously worked with him at Southampton.

Valery made his competitive Wednesday debut against Plymouth Argyle on the opening weekend of the 2024/25 Championship season. He became a regular on the right side of the Owls’ defence and made 40 appearances across all competitions during his first campaign.

He remained a key member of the side during the first half of the 2025/26 season before joining Swiss club Young Boys on loan in February 2026. The agreement ran until the end of the campaign and did not include an option to buy.

Valery returned to Sheffield Wednesday following the conclusion of the loan. He remains contracted to the Owls until the summer of 2027.

Born in France to a Tunisian mother, Valery represented France at Under-17 and Under-18 level before switching his international allegiance to Tunisia. He made his senior Tunisia debut in September 2022 and was selected for the country’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
