Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of Jaden Heskey on a season-long loan from Manchester City, bringing the midfielder back to Hillsborough for a second spell.
The 20-year-old returns to S6 after making 20 Championship appearances for Wednesday during the 2025/26 campaign and is eligible to feature against Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park tonight.
Back at Hillsborough
Heskey became a familiar face to Wednesday supporters during a hugely challenging campaign last season.
Despite the circumstances surrounding the club, the Manchester City youngster established himself in the first-team picture and went on to make 20 Championship appearances.
His return has been on the agenda for some time. The Wednesday Word reported back in May that Wednesday were interested in bringing Heskey back for another spell, while Sporting Director Simon Wilson has now revealed that the midfielder was a target from the beginning of his own time at the club.
Heskey said he had been keen on a Hillsborough return after his experience last season.
“I'm over the moon to be back after I got a taste of it last season. It's definitely a place that I wanted to return to.
“It was really tough with the games and the situation that we were in, but I think the fans, the support that we had all the way through, it couldn't really go unnoticed.
“The last day was a special day that I'll always remember.
“I've already met the squad, and they're really top lads. It'll be easy just to fit in with the squad again.”
From Manchester City's academy to Wednesday
Heskey has been with Manchester City since the age of four and progressed through the club's academy system before captaining their Under-18 side.
He signed his first professional contract in 2023 and was handed his Manchester City first-team debut by Pep Guardiola last season, featuring in a 2-0 Carabao Cup victory over Huddersfield Town.
His subsequent move to Hillsborough proved to be the breakthrough opportunity of his senior career, and Wednesday have now secured him for the entirety of the 2026/27 campaign.
Wilson believes the midfielder returns as a player who can add something different to Henrik Pedersen's options.
“Jaden was a target for the club from the day I arrived following a really productive loan spell last season, so we are delighted that, after considering a number of offers, he has chosen to return to Sheffield Wednesday.
“Henrik and the staff felt he was one of the players who developed most during that period and the additional analysis we have done only strengthened that view.
“He joins what we believe is a terrific group of players competing for selection in midfield and brings different attributes that complement what we already have.
“More than anything, when he arrived this morning, what struck me was how quickly he had the whole training ground smiling. He is a hardworking, positive person who is desperate to do well for Wednesday, and we are really pleased to have him back.”
Is Wednesday's summer business complete?
All indications are that Heskey will be the final addition of Wednesday's summer rebuild.
The Wednesday Word reports that no further arrivals are expected before the transfer deadline and that loans out of the senior squad are also considered unlikely at this stage.
There is believed to be National League interest in some of Wednesday's youngsters, however, meaning opportunities for temporary moves could still emerge after the EFL window closes.
For now, the focus turns immediately to the pitch.
Heskey already knows the club, the manager knows what he can offer, and unlike many of Wednesday's summer arrivals he requires little introduction to the Hillsborough crowd.
After returning to South Yorkshire on deadline day, he could begin his second Wednesday spell as soon as tonight.
