Joe Lumley returns to Sheffield Wednesday in permanent Bristol City move

Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of goalkeeper Joe Lumley from Bristol City.

The 31-year-old returns to Hillsborough after making two appearances for the Owls during a seven-day emergency loan spell in October 2025.

Lumley was brought in following an injury to Pierce Charles and a suspension for Ethan Horvath, starting Championship fixtures against Middlesbrough and Oxford United before returning to Ashton Gate.

His move back to Wednesday now gives Henrik Pedersen an experienced senior option following Charles’ transfer to Manchester City.

Lumley has made more than 200 senior appearances during a career that has included spells with Queens Park Rangers, Middlesbrough, Reading, Southampton and Bristol City.

The goalkeeper came through the youth systems at Tottenham Hotspur and QPR before establishing himself as Rangers’ first choice during the 2018/19 campaign, making 46 appearances across all competitions and recording 16 clean sheets.

He later made 42 league appearances while on loan at Reading during the 2022/23 season and was named the club’s Players’ Player of the Year.

Lumley joined Southampton in 2023 and was part of the squad that won promotion to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs. He subsequently made his Premier League debut in a 1–1 draw with Brighton in November 2024.

After joining Bristol City on a two-year contract in June 2025, opportunities were limited, although his short spell with Wednesday gave him an early introduction to the club and Hillsborough.

The move provides Wednesday with an experienced goalkeeper who already knows the club as Pedersen continues to reshape his squad ahead of the 2026/27 League One campaign.

Lumley becomes the latest addition during a busy summer of recruitment at Hillsborough, following the arrivals of players including Ricardo Santos, Callum Slattery, Sil Swinkels, Harry Gray and Louie Barry.
