Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of Aston Villa forward Louie Barry, adding one of the EFL’s most exciting attacking talents to their summer rebuild.

Barry arrives with a reputation that has followed him since his teenage years. The forward came through the academy at West Bromwich Albion before making a high-profile move to Barcelona in 2019, becoming the first English-born player to live at La Masia.

Aston Villa brought him back to England in January 2020, and his name soon reached a wider audience in memorable fashion. In January 2021, with Villa forced to field a youth side against Liverpool in the FA Cup because of a COVID-19 outbreak, Barry raced through and scored a composed equaliser against the Premier League champions.

That night did not immediately open the door to regular first-team football at Villa Park, but Barry has since built a strong EFL profile through a series of loan spells.

His most productive period came at Stockport County, where he became a standout attacking figure across multiple spells. Barry’s movement, acceleration and willingness to run at defenders made him one of the most dangerous wide forwards in the division, while his goalscoring return showed there is end product to match the promise.

For Wednesday, this is a signing with clear upside.

Barry is still only 23, but he already has experience across different levels of senior football. He can play from the left, where he likes to cut inside onto his stronger foot, but he is also capable of operating centrally as a forward. That flexibility should give the Owls another option across the front line as the squad continues to take shape.

The move also gives Barry something he has not always had in recent years: stability.

After a career path that has taken him from West Brom to Barcelona, Aston Villa and several EFL loan clubs, Hillsborough now offers him the chance to settle, develop and become an important part of a team being rebuilt with younger, hungry players.

Wednesday have already added several new faces this summer, and Barry’s arrival strengthens the sense that the club are trying to build a squad with pace, energy and resale value.

If he can bring his Stockport form to Hillsborough, the Owls may have landed a forward capable of giving the attack a very different edge.
