Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles has completed a permanent transfer to Manchester City.
The Owls confirmed the departure on Friday, bringing an end to the 20-year-old’s five-year spell at Hillsborough. The terms of the agreement have not been disclosed by either club.
Charles returns to the club where he began his football education, having spent time in Manchester City’s academy before joining Wednesday in 2021.
He progressed through the Owls’ youth system and made his senior debut against Coventry City in the FA Cup in January 2024. Charles went on to establish himself as a first-team goalkeeper, earning the number one shirt ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
His development was interrupted by shoulder injuries last season, but he returned to action in March and finished his Wednesday career with 36 senior appearances across all competitions.
Charles also established himself at international level during his time at Hillsborough. Eligible for Northern Ireland through his mother, he made his senior debut against Belarus in October 2024 and has since collected 12 caps.
Reports ahead of the announcement suggested that the overall transfer package could eventually reach £10 million, although the guaranteed fee was reported to be considerably lower and dependent on future add-ons and clauses. Those figures have not been officially confirmed.
Charles is expected to continue his development away from the Etihad, with Queens Park Rangers widely reported to be leading the race to sign him on loan for the 2026/27 Championship season. No loan move has yet been announced.
His departure removes one of Wednesday’s most valuable young players from the squad, but the deal should provide further funds as the club continues its League One rebuild.
Charles leaves Hillsborough having developed from an academy prospect into a full Northern Ireland international, with his performances and composure in possession earning him a return to one of the biggest clubs in English football.
