Biography

Di’Shon Bernard is a Jamaica international centre-back who joined Sheffield Wednesday following his departure from Manchester United in July 2023.

Born in Wandsworth, Bernard began his football development within Chelsea’s academy before moving to Manchester United at the age of 16 in 2017.

He progressed through the youth ranks at Old Trafford and made his senior debut in November 2019, starting a UEFA Europa League group-stage fixture against Astana in Kazakhstan.

Bernard gained regular first-team experience after joining Salford City on loan in October 2020. He made 31 appearances in all competitions during the 2020/21 season and scored twice, including his first senior goal with a late header against Carlisle United.

The defender stepped up to the Championship the following season, completing a season-long loan move to Hull City. He made 28 appearances for the Tigers across all competitions and continued his development in the second tier.

After returning to Manchester United, Bernard spent the second half of the 2022/23 campaign on loan with Portsmouth, making ten League One appearances.

Manchester United confirmed that Bernard would leave the club at the end of his contract in June 2023. He subsequently signed for Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer on 31 July 2023.

Bernard made his Wednesday debut in an EFL Cup victory over Stockport County and made his first Championship start away at Cardiff City later that month. He became an important member of the Owls’ defence during the 2023/24 season, making 36 appearances in all competitions.

After being offered a new deal at the end of that campaign, Bernard signed a new contract with Wednesday in July 2024.

He scored his first goal for the Owls in an EFL Cup victory over Blackpool in September 2024, before registering his first Championship goal against Cardiff City two months later.

Bernard’s 2024/25 season ended prematurely when he suffered a serious knee injury against West Bromwich Albion in February 2025. The injury required surgery and subsequently ruled him out for the remainder of the campaign and throughout the 2025/26 season.

Born in England to a family of Jamaican heritage, Bernard elected to represent Jamaica internationally. He made his senior debut against Qatar in June 2023 and was selected for Jamaica’s squad at the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

He scored his first international goal against Saint Kitts and Nevis during that tournament and later represented Jamaica at the 2024 Copa América.
