Biography

Max Josef Lowe is an English professional footballer who plays as a defender for Sheffield Wednesday.

Born in South Normanton, Derbyshire, Lowe joined Derby County’s academy at a young age and progressed through the club’s youth system.

He was first included in a senior matchday squad in October 2013, when he was an unused substitute during a 4–4 Championship draw with Ipswich Town.

Lowe signed professional terms with Derby in June 2015, although a hamstring injury disrupted his development during the following season.

He made his professional debut on 23 August 2016 in an EFL Cup tie against Carlisle United.

The match finished 1–1 before Derby won a remarkable penalty shootout 14–13, with Lowe converting his own spot kick.

His league debut followed against Cardiff City in September 2016.

Lowe joined Shrewsbury Town on loan in January 2018 and made 16 appearances in all competitions.

He helped the League One club challenge for promotion and reach the EFL Trophy final, gaining valuable experience of regular senior football.

In August 2018, Lowe joined Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen on loan.

He quickly established himself as an important member of the squad and featured at both left-back and left wing-back.

After briefly returning to Derby in January 2019, Lowe rejoined Aberdeen for the remainder of the campaign.

He made more than 40 appearances across his two spells in Scotland, scored twice and helped Aberdeen reach the 2018 Scottish League Cup final.

Lowe returned to Derby and became a regular first-team player during the 2019/20 Championship season.

He made 31 appearances in all competitions and demonstrated his ability to operate on either side of the defence.

Lowe left Derby in September 2020 after making 48 senior appearances for the club.

He joined Sheffield United on a four-year contract and made his Premier League debut against Fulham the following month.

His first season at Bramall Lane was disrupted by injury and limited opportunities as the Blades were relegated from the top flight.

Lowe joined Nottingham Forest on loan for the 2021/22 campaign.

He became a regular at left wing-back and contributed to a successful season as Forest secured promotion to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs.

After returning to Sheffield United, Lowe featured regularly during the 2022/23 season as the Blades finished second in the Championship and won promotion.

He made a further 10 Premier League appearances during the 2023/24 campaign before leaving the club at the end of his contract.

Sheffield Wednesday confirmed on 15 June 2024 that Lowe had agreed to join the club.

His move officially took effect on 1 July following the expiration of his Sheffield United contract.

Lowe made his Wednesday debut on 11 August 2024, starting at left-back as the Owls opened the Championship season with a 4–0 victory over Plymouth Argyle at Hillsborough.

He established himself as an important member of the defence during his first season and was used primarily on the left side.

Lowe also demonstrated his versatility by featuring in other defensive roles when required.

His 2024/25 campaign ended prematurely after he suffered an injury during the Steel City derby against Sheffield United in March 2025.

He returned during the following season and remained part of the Wednesday squad through a period of considerable financial and contractual uncertainty at the club.

In June 2026, Lowe signed a new one-year contract with Sheffield Wednesday, including an option for a further season.

At international level, he represented England at Under-16, Under-17, Under-18 and Under-20 level.

Lowe earned 24 youth international caps and featured during qualifying for the 2014 UEFA European Under-17 Championship and at the 2019 Toulon Tournament.

He is predominantly a left-back or left wing-back but can also operate on the opposite side of the defence.

Lowe’s game is based on athleticism, forward running and his ability to support attacks from wide positions.

He is comfortable carrying the ball up the pitch, providing width and adapting to different defensive systems.

His experience in the Premier League, Championship, League One and Scottish Premiership has made him a versatile member of the Sheffield Wednesday squad.
