Max Lowe signs new Sheffield Wednesday deal as Owls rebuild continues

Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that Max Lowe has committed his future to the club, with the left-back signing a new one-year contract at Hillsborough.

The deal also includes an option for a further year, giving Wednesday some welcome continuity on the left side of defence as preparations continue for the 2026/27 League One season.

Lowe joined the Owls in the summer of 2024 following his departure from Sheffield United and has gone on to make 66 appearances for the club. His decision to stay is another positive step in what has already started to feel like a more settled summer in S6.

Speaking after the deal was confirmed, Lowe said he was delighted to get the agreement sorted quickly, adding that “a lot of people behind the scenes have worked really hard” to make it happen. He also praised the Wednesday support, saying the fans had been great with him from day one.

The defender also referenced the final-day win over West Brom, describing it as a special day and suggesting it offered a glimpse of what could still come at Hillsborough.

For Wednesday, this is more than just another retained player. Lowe brings experience, Championship pedigree and flexibility, having played as a left-back, wing-back and on the left side of a defensive unit during his career.

With the Owls now rebuilding for life in League One, keeping players of Lowe’s level is a strong signal. The squad still needs work, but retaining senior players who could easily have attracted interest elsewhere helps give Henrik Pedersen’s side a firmer base.

Lowe’s new deal follows the recent return of Liam Cooper, adding further experience to Wednesday’s defensive options. After a turbulent period at the club, these are the kind of decisions supporters will have wanted to see: proven players choosing to stay, rather than another summer of constant turnover.

There will be bigger tests to come in the transfer window, but this is a sensible and important piece of business.

For Lowe, it is a chance to be part of the reset. For Wednesday, it is another sign that the rebuild is beginning to take shape.
