Player profile
William Grainger is a Welsh professional footballer who plays as a centre-forward for Sheffield Wednesday.
Grainger developed through Wednesday’s academy while also representing Wales at several youth levels. He attended Wales High School in Kiveton Park and established himself as one of the Owls’ most highly rated young forwards.
During his development at Under-16 and Under-18 level, Grainger became a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. He scored 14 times for Wednesday’s Under-18s and contributed to 48 goals across his club and Wales youth appearances.
Grainger began a two-year scholarship with Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 2025. Despite still being only 16, he was quickly promoted into the first-team environment and was named in senior matchday squads against Bolton Wanderers and Wrexham.
He made his professional debut against Leeds United in the EFL Cup, coming off the bench as Wednesday progressed following a penalty shootout.
Grainger made his Championship debut against Norwich City on 25 February 2026. His first senior goal followed away to Oxford United on 25 April, when he scored Wednesday’s consolation in a 4–1 defeat.
He was handed his first senior start on the final day of the 2025/26 season against West Bromwich Albion.
At international level, Grainger has represented Wales from Under-15 through to Under-19 level. He scored seven goals for the Under-17s and marked his Wales Under-19 debut against Japan in November 2025 with an early goal.
