Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed the return of experienced defender Liam Cooper, with the Scotland international signing a new one-year contract ahead of the 2026/27 League One season.
The 34-year-old centre-back initially joined Wednesday on a short-term deal last November and went on to make 14 appearances during the club’s difficult Championship campaign. His return adds leadership, experience and defensive depth as the Owls prepare for a fresh start under new ownership.
Cooper arrives back at Middlewood Road today as the squad reports for pre-season testing.
Speaking after his return was confirmed, Cooper said he was delighted to be part of what he described as a “new era” at Hillsborough.
“It’s a new era for Sheffield Wednesday and one I’m absolutely delighted to be part of,” he said. “I can’t tell you how delighted I am to be here – we can look forward now with the right people in the right roles – it’s really exciting.
“The new ownership has come in with unbelievable ideas and the know-how to run a business.
“It’s all the fans, the players, the staff have ever wanted and we’re going to get that now. Selling over 23,000 season tickets is unbelievable and I can’t wait to get out there. That first home game of the season is going to be some spectacle.”
Cooper’s return feels significant for Wednesday beyond what he can offer on the pitch. A 19-cap Scotland international with more than 400 senior career appearances to his name, he brings the kind of experience and authority that could be vital in a promotion push.
Sporting Director Simon Wilson also highlighted the impact Cooper made during his first spell at the club.
“From my earliest conversations with players and staff, it was clear that Liam made a big impact in the dressing room last season,” Wilson said.
“He was a leader in difficult circumstances, providing guidance and mentorship to a young group, and he is the type of player who represents the culture we want to create.
“Importantly, he is a winner and we believe he can play an important role for us this season on and off the field. We are delighted to welcome him back to the club.”
For Wednesday, this is another clear sign of the club trying to build a stronger culture and spine ahead of the new campaign. Cooper may not be a long-term signing in age profile, but as a one-year addition for a League One promotion push, his leadership, standards and experience could prove extremely useful.
With pre-season now underway, Wednesday’s rebuild is beginning to take shape — and Cooper’s return gives the dressing room a familiar senior figure as the club looks to move forward.
