Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of Jordi Liongola from Belgian side RAAL La Louvière for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old Burundi international becomes the latest addition to Henrik Pedersen’s squad as the Owls continue their rebuild ahead of the new League One campaign.

Liongola arrives at Hillsborough after playing an important role in RAAL’s rise through Belgian football, with Wednesday sporting director Simon Wilson highlighting his contribution to the club’s back-to-back promotions and their subsequent establishment in the top tier.

Wilson also made clear that Wednesday believe they are bringing in a player with both quality and experience, while acknowledging that patience may be required as he adapts to a new country, a new league and the demands of English football.

That note of patience is important. Liongola should not necessarily be viewed as an instant answer to one position, but his profile does make him an interesting addition to a squad that still needs depth, athleticism and flexibility.

Primarily listed as a right midfielder, Liongola is also capable of operating on the left and at right-back. That versatility could prove valuable for Pedersen, particularly on the right side of the pitch where Wednesday may need both immediate cover and longer-term planning.

Liam Palmer remains one of the most experienced and reliable figures in the squad, but at 34, Wednesday will naturally have to think about how that role evolves over time. Liongola’s ability to work in that area of the pitch could make him a useful player to develop alongside Palmer rather than someone expected to replace him immediately.

It gives Wednesday a potential handover scenario if Liongola settles well. Palmer’s experience, consistency and understanding of the club could be valuable for a new arrival adjusting to English football, while Liongola’s pace, versatility and international experience offer something different for the squad.

Born in Belgium, Liongola came through the system at Standard Liège and has also had spells with Royal Antwerp and Lierse Kempenzonen. He later established himself with RAAL La Louvière, where his performances helped earn him a move to Hillsborough.

The undisclosed fee also makes this a notable piece of business for Wednesday. Rather than waiting for the free-agent market, the Owls have moved to secure a player under contract, suggesting he was identified as someone who fits the club’s recruitment plans.

For supporters, the key will be how quickly Liongola can adjust. Wilson’s comments suggest Wednesday are fully aware that an adaptation period is likely, but they clearly see enough quality and upside to believe the move is worth making.

With more business expected before the start of the season, Liongola adds another option to Pedersen’s squad and gives Wednesday a player who could contribute in more than one role as the club look to build a side capable of challenging in League One.
